I have never watched an actual knife throwing but I have seen it many times in movies and on TV. I cannot decide if it is an art or a sport. In our time, it definitely is not meant to kill; maybe in earlier times, it did. The times that I saw it in movies and on TV, it looked more like an entertaining display of skill. I will just leave it at that.
